Navigating HIV Care Amid New Public Health Threats: The Rise of Bird Flu in the U.S.

At Caring Communities, we know that health challenges don’t happen in isolation. While HIV remains central to our mission—connecting people to care, wellness, and support—we also recognize the importance of staying informed about emerging health threats, like the recent rise of bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza) here in the U.S.

This strain of bird flu has been detected in poultry, dairy cattle, and even a few human cases, raising concerns among public health officials. While the general risk of infection for most people is still considered low, those with compromised immune systems, including some people living with HIV, may need to take added precautions.

Protecting Yourself: Steps Everyone Can Take to Prevent Bird Flu Exposure

1. Avoid direct contact with wild birds or sick animals – Don’t touch sick or dead birds or animals, including livestock like cattle, and report them to local authorities.

2. Cook poultry, eggs, and dairy products thoroughly – Properly cooking meat, eggs, and milk to safe temperatures kills viruses, including avian influenza.

3. Practice good hand hygiene – Wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after handling animals or animal products.

4. Wear protective gear when exposed to animals – If you work on a farm or in an environment where you may be around birds or livestock, use gloves, masks, and other protective equipment.

5. Stay informed on local health alerts – Follow updates from the CDC or your local health department regarding outbreaks or new guidance.

6. Stay engaged in your HIV care – Keeping your immune system strong through regular medication and checkups helps protect you from opportunistic infections, including viruses like bird flu.

For those living with HIV taking these precautions can offer extra peace of mind. And if you have concerns about how bird flu or any other health issue might affect you, we’re here to help.
